PROJECT DETAILS

The Redevelopment of the Cooperstown Housing

Chellgran Hall (formerly Woodland Glen I) & Woodland Glen II represent the first phase in the redevelopment of the old Cooperstown Housing Complex as part of the partnership between the University of Kentucky and Education Realty Trust. The sister residence halls provide a modern living experience as well as opportunities for academic study and instruction for the students who live there. Combined, the buildings accommodate 818 students.

Two 5-story buildings comprise the living learning community and feature private 2-bedroom suites, designed around community living offering various living learning spaces, meeting and study rooms, social gatherings spaces, and three university classrooms. Chellgran Hall serves the R.O.T.C Community and Woodland Glen II serves as the Greenhouse Environment & Sustainability Residential College as well as the Agriculture Residential College.

Each residence hall features a community kitchen, hi-tech laundry facilities, and 2-story entry lobbies for use by all residents at Chellgran Hall & Woodland Glen II. The student living and learning environment is enriched with works by local Kentucky artists throughout the lobbies and circulation spaces. The residence hall showcases modern technology including wireless Internet and satellite television.

Each residence hall was designed around a courtyard to protect and preserve large existing trees. Each building boosts a study tower that faces the central campus Library and offers breathtaking views into the heart of campus. Chellgran Hall features a chiming clock tower that is back lighted with UK blue LED lighting that shines on special occasions. Both residence halls are constructed with the first level as a concrete framed structure with the upper levels being wood framed.

Both Chellgran Hall and Woodland Glen II are LEED Certified

They Aren't "Dorms" Anymore
Today’s college students embrace housing facilities that are lively, engaging, state-of-the-art, and sustainable.

Sherman Carter Barnhart's design solutions evaluate the entire campus and campus fabric to engage the residence hall with the university campus as a whole. Residence halls are not isolated but instead a key component to the campus. Residence halls are walkable, amenity-filled communities that more closely resemble a mixed-use apartment complex than what we once called a dormitory.

When I describe what it was like living in Haggin Hall (the old one) in '78 .... Oliver (son who lived in Lewis Hall as a freshman and still as a sophomore) just looks at me weird .... he just can't imagine .... nice work SCB !

Wish I could be a student now!

Fostering Privacy & Community
It's a balancing act. On one side the majority of freshmen coming to campus have never shared a bedroom. They want to choose how and when they socialize. On the other side, university and college officials know a sense of community must exist for students to succeed.

Our design solutions provide a balance. Student rooms feature private sleeping and study areas coupled with community eating and socializing spaces. To continue to foster a sense of community, each residence hall features kitchens, lounges and study spaces.
