The design of the technology center reflects a corporate headquarter image, furthering the “real world connection.”
One of the First College & Career Readiness Centers
The Area Technology Center is a one-of-a-kind facility offering a pathway to higher education opportunities with KCTCS and WKU, as well as career training for local industry. During the programming sessions, Sherman Carter Barnhart met with each program director in Frankfort to design the facility to reflect the certifications that would be offered to each student.
Open to all Warren County high school students, the design solution focuses on a central, circular lobby with two “spokes” radiating into the laboratory areas of instruction. The first spoke houses; the computer oriented service centers and the health careers’ hospital simulation lab. The second spoke consists of the “high bay” labs; Construction technology; Industrial business; and Local industry “flex” labs.
Each of these labs have adjacent classrooms with panoramic glass for teacher supervision, as well as limited access to the labs. Outdoor enclosed courtyards, adjacent to the high bay labs, allow students to experience “real world” working conditions for all trades, and provides excellent space for storage of materials for welding, auto repair, construction lumber, etc.
The design of the technology center reflects a corporate headquarter image, furthering the “real world connection”. The circular lobby with clerestory windows, passive solar sunshades, and energy saving sandwich panel metal roof provide extensive daylighting and energy savings.
