A Community’s New Focal Point

Sherman Carter Barnhart’s design solution not only created a dramatic new identity for Spencer County High School but also created a new focal point for the community. The renovation of the high school created a bigger, brighter media center and cafeteria – all sited to address a main intersection in Taylorsville, KY.

Together, the addition components create a new visual impact for the school both inside and out while also encouraging community and after hour use.

Inside, spacious hallways with daylighting lead to the current classroom wings. The existing library and administrative offices were renovated to become much needed science classroom and laboratory space.

The classroom addition on the south side of the building addressed school growth and overcrowding while the existing cafeteria and kitchen will be renovated to become technology education space and a FMD classroom. Other features include space to accommodate a school radio, TV production studio, and school store.
