Project Details

Located along Main Street, the new Rowan County Courthouse is a traditional one-story government building. The 19,000 SF facility houses numerous county offices and community services including:

  • County Clerk, including a Vault
  • County Extension
  • PVA
  • Chief Clerk
  • County Sheriff and Deputy
  • Detectives
  • County Attorney
  • Waste Management Office
  • Coroner’s Office
  • County Treasurer
  • Judge Executive
  • Leasable Office Space with Reception Area, File Room, and (2) Private Offices
  • Fiscal Courtroom
  • Conference Room
  • Staff Breakroom

The exterior design of each facility reflects the importance and permanence of the government services Rowan County provides to the community while incorporating the style and context of the local community. Windows incorporate the proportion and style of historic windows in the community. Located adjacent to the Rowan County Judicial Center, (also designed by Sherman Carter Barnhart), the two buildings are joined by sidewalks and green spaces, providing easy access to all County services. Rowan County officials wanted the government center to encourage public participation and promote a sense of community by creating a public plaza, as the new classic centerpiece for the downtown, fashioned after the traditional, “courthouse square”.

The site also includes an 89 car permeable paver parking lot.
