Consolidated Districts Create a New Community
Mercer County Senior High School represents the merged Mercer County School District and Harrodsburg Independent School District. Hired to create a new educational model for the newly consolidated school district (Mercer County and Harrodsburg Ind.), Sherman Carter Barnhart first helped to promote, support, and successfully pass the building tax issue required to construct the new high school.
By guiding the Interactive Design Process with staff, students and administration from both Mercer County and Harrodsburg Independent, we were able to design a facility that unified the student body and the community.
The two-story high school houses two distinct wings, academic and public. The media center serves as the center of the academic wing, and heart of the school. The school is also designed to serve the community as the public wing can be secured separately from the rest of the building. To accommodate future growth, the building is designed to be easily expanded.
The campus also includes a new athletic complex with football, soccer, baseball and softball fields.
This school is an example of how a facility can respond to the needs of a community.
