The new London Elementary classroom building and renovated existing gym, create a seamless “new school” by maintaining the architectural integrity of the 1930’s WPA era gym building.
A Seamless New “WPA era” School
The goal of the project was to remove the existing London Elementary classroom building, replace it with a new school, renovate the existing gym, and create a seamless “new school” by maintaining the architectural integrity of the 1930’s WPA era gym building.
In Phase I, a new 2-story building addition to the gymnasium building was constructed featuring a new administrative suite, media center, and a partial lower level classroom wing. Also included in this phase was the gym renovation and restoration. Phase two focused on the removal of the 1960’s elementary school and construction of a kitchen/cafeteria addition to the new building. At the main entry, a 2-story open balcony overlooks the first floor and an illuminated translucent ceiling provides a sense of openness and warmth. Throughout the hallways, street lights with banner arms, and intricate floor patterns and borders create a “streetscape” atmosphere. Exposed steel structures with a decorative suspended wood ceiling and open clerestory provide light and warmth to the media center, while the exposed wood trusses highlight the restoration of the existing WPA gymnasium.
The existing road was lowered, overcoming access and grade changes, to create a new main entry boulevard for bus traffic and parent/student drop-off. All utilities and sewers were relocated, and new sidewalks, covered walkways, playgrounds and athletic fields were installed.
