Iconic WPA Era Building Restored
Liberty Elementary gymnasium is an iconic WPA era building in the Liberty community. In need of a modern gymnasium, the Casey County Board of Education, sought a physical assessment and study of this 1936 building to determine if the building should be renovated or razed.
After a detailed investigation and cost comparison completed by Sherman Carter Barnhart, Casey County Schools decided to keep the building and renovate the interior into a modern, state-of-the-art gymnasium and restore the exterior.
The renovation demolished the entire interior of the gymnasium both upper and lower floors, leaving only the exterior walls, columns, roof trusses, and floor beams. New flooring, athletic equipment, finishes and bleachers created a new gym for the school and community. Additions to the gymnasium included a new bleacher seating area, a new lobby vestibule and a vestibule on the west side of the building with a new ramp for loading and unloading. Two classrooms, including an art classroom was added along with restrooms to serve the gym.
The exterior was renovated and restored with new brick veneer, windows and architectural details in accordance with the WPA era.
