ADUC renovation and expansion half way complete

Morehead State University

The Adron Doran University Center renovation and expansion on the campus of Morehead State University is now 54 percent complete.

The $49.5 million project broke ground one year ago on Aug. 26., 2016. The construction will add 75,000 square feet and renovate almost every area of the existing structure.

Changes to the building are based on student suggestions which included more space to host events and organizations, expanded dining options and more student oriented and accessible services.

“The renovation side of the project is at the point of finishing dry wall on the second and third floors, we’ve finished rough in for the mechanicals, tile work in the bathrooms has begun on those floors, and the new brick and windows are installed,” said Mike Kier, project manager for Monarch Construction Company. “On the new addition we have all three floors poured and the steel will be set and the shoring will be removed.”

A business center, admissions and welcome center and additional space for Student Success and Student Activities, Inclusion and Leadership will make this building a one-stop area for all students.

“This will provide many amenities for MSU students and the community such as expanded dining, gathering and community areas throughout the facility and the overall openness will be very inviting,” said Rick Linio, assistant vice president for Facilities Management. “Each day the facility is evolving. We are beginning to see the expansion and existing structure develop as a cohesive and complete design.”

There will be multiple dining lounges for students and several eatery options including a Steak and Shake, Which Wich, Moe’s, Starbucks and Aramark brands.

“I personally think students will be excited about the Sports Pub and the lounge area with a fire place. That area will really be a show piece for the addition portion of the building,” added Kier. “The new sidewalks are the biggest changes I’ve seen so far. The pavers tied all the surrounding buildings together and made the campus come together aesthetically. The removal of the marble and replacement of brick also helped tie everything together.”

The 22-month project is on track to be complete in the fall of 2018.

ADUC was originally built in 1955 and has since been renovated twice in 1967 and in 2003.

Sherman Carter Barnhart Architects designed the project and Monarch Construction Company is overseeing the completion.
